Prabowo Urges ASEAN Unity Amid Global Fragmentation | ASEAN Summit 2025 (2025)

In a world pulling itself apart, the very survival of Southeast Asia as a unified force hangs in the balance. Can ASEAN truly stand together against the pressures of global power plays? Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto thinks it's the only way, issuing a powerful call for unity amidst growing global instability.

During the retreat session of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, President Subianto passionately argued that ASEAN's strength lies in its collective identity. “Unity and centrality are not just keywords. Without them, we risk being divided by greater powers,” he stated, emphasizing that these principles are the bedrock of regional stability and independence.

But here's where it gets controversial: some analysts argue that true unity within ASEAN is a myth. The diverse economic interests and political systems of member states often lead to internal disagreements and hinder collective action. Is genuine unity achievable, or is it simply a comforting ideal?

Subianto went on to say that ASEAN's power isn’t found in confrontation, but rather its consistent ability to foster constructive and inclusive relationships. He highlighted ASEAN's past successes in navigating complex challenges through respectful dialogue and mutual understanding – a testament to the organization's unique approach to diplomacy. Think of the various territorial disputes in the South China Sea, where ASEAN has consistently advocated for peaceful resolutions.

Addressing the critical issue of maritime security, the President underscored the importance of a unified ASEAN voice in upholding international maritime law. He specifically urged member states to consistently enforce the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982. And this is the part most people miss: UNCLOS provides a comprehensive legal framework for maritime activities, but its interpretation and implementation are often contested, particularly in the South China Sea. He also pushed for the completion of an effective and substantive Code of Conduct (COC) in the near future, by next year, aiming to manage disputes and prevent escalation in the region.

Concluding his address, Prabowo called upon all ASEAN members to fortify their solidarity in the face of emerging global challenges. He stressed that ASEAN’s unity isn’t just a catchy phrase; it's the pathway toward a future defined by peace and prosperity. He reaffirmed Indonesia’s unwavering commitment to pursuing peace, prosperity, and the well-being of its citizens and the broader region.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) from October 26 to 28, 2025, operated under the theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” This theme reflects ASEAN's commitment to addressing both economic and environmental challenges in a holistic and collaborative manner.
